The modern approach to teaching of specialists in engineering, scientific and practical field of activity requires the development of research skills. Such skills students (and graduate students) receive in the study of natural and technical disciplines, as well as performing some laboratory work in specially created laboratories of institutes, universities and schools. In the study of natural Sciences, especially physics, experimental and practical activities are extremely important. Students learn to use measuring devices, to receive experimental data, to process results according to the methodical descriptions offered in these works. They should learn to draw their own conclusions from the experimental data, use educational and reference books. Methodical aspects of practical works on physics, developed on the basis of open scientific data, differ from traditional works both in the form of methodological techniques used in the organization of educational activities, and the scale of the use of various technical means for “experiments”. Proposed laboratory work should allow the student in the allotted time: • to learn the field of science or Sciences to which laboratory work relates; • to study the necessary part of the mathematical apparatus; • to receive and independently process raw data for laboratory work from open sources; • to bring the processing to the final conclusions and compare them with some results of similar professional studies. The article deals with a series of practical laboratory and / or (extra-laboratory) works based on the counting of craters on the surface of the Moon and Mercury.
